After finishing a media interview in Christchurch New Zealand about gluten free travels and the Let’s Eat Out! series, a friend and I wanted to celebrate and asked our hotel concierge for a restaurant recommendation. Luckily, we were able to get a reservation at Cook’n with Gas.
Once there, we discovered that this local gem is a multi-award winning bistro serving top New Zealand cuisine in a low key atmosphere in a quaint 1860’s villa.
Of course without mentioning any of my books, I discussed my dietary requirements, ingredients and food preparation with the staff in order to choose my courses. I was very impressed and confident with the staffs’ understanding of coeliac disease, gluten free diets and food allergies. My friend can eat anything so he really loved exploring all of the menu choices.
I ordered the seasonal salad with locally produced vegetables as my starter and the hallmark lamb for my main. The chef took the time to even make a special gluten and dairy free jus for my dish. My friend had the gold medal mussels to start and then he loved his canterbury duck. Dessert wines were also amazing! Overall, the quality of the food, the wine list and the entire dining experience was great and relaxing – we can’t wait to return!
