Since my previous post is about baking delicious gluten and dairy free holiday cookies, I needed to make sure that those of you with nut allergies had tasty dessert options as well. The daughter of one of my business colleagues is anaphylactic to peanuts which means that she has anaphylaxis – a life-threatening type of allergic reaction triggered when she eats peanuts.
Since her symptoms develop within seconds or minutes, my co-worker is constantly on guard and researching safe food options for her young daughter wherever they go.
So, I want to share with you three of her favorite peanut and tree nut free bakeries located in Illinois, Minnesota and New York. Remember, anyone with anaphylaxis must always be be prepared and carry epinephrine auto-injectors such as Epi-Pen or TwinJect with you, at all times, in case of an emergency.
Note: The three bakeries described here are peanut and tree nut free. However, they ALL CONTAIN GLUTEN, WHEAT AND DAIRY in their baked goods. For other alternatives, please view a detailed listing of specialty bakeries in the US and around the world.
Nutphree’s Cupcakes is a new peanut and tree nut free bakery located in Mount Prospect, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. When the owners’ son was first diagnosed with peanut and tree nut allergies, the parents couldn’t believe how difficult it was to find baked goods that were safe for him to eat. So they decided to make it easier for others and established Nutphree’s. They have implemented a code of standards to ensure that their facility remains nut free at all times. They do not allow nuts into the facility at anytime and have allergen free statements from the ingredient vendors to ensure that the kitchen remains a nut free environment.
During the most recent visit to YoYo Donuts and Coffee Bar in Minnetonka Minnesota, my friend’s daughter loved her donuts so much that they brought back two dozen donuts to freeze and safely enjoy for the next few months! YoYo is a 100% peanut and tree nut free facility which means that they do not purchase or use any peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oils or tree nuts of any kind in their facility. They make the donuts from scratch every morning and offer a variety of delicious options!
Another favorite while visiting New York City is Eleni’s with nut free hand-iced sugar cookies and cupcakes. Their Manhattan stores include the Chelsea Market Store located at 75 Ninth Avenue and 15th as well as the Madison Avenue Store at 1266 Madison Ave between 90th and 91st.
Eleni’s policies for maintaining a nut-free environment include allergen-free statements from all of their ingredient vendors as well as a “No Nuts Allowed” policy in the facility for employees and visitors. To further ensure safety, Eleni’s uses environmental testing swabs to randomly and frequently test the bakery and both retail stores for the presence of peanuts and tree nuts. The swabs use highly specific antibodies to detect the allergic proteins from the nuts. Enjoy delicious nut free cookies and cupcakes in Manhattan!
